Perfect Timing for a Seascape at Kalbarri | Midwest

Our trip up to Kalbarri in the September holidays was a family getaway, but you know the camera is never far away, for the opportunity to sneak away for some landscape photography.

There are plenty of attractions around Kalbarri draw families up to 600kms from Perth, the National Park with Nature's window, the Murchison River that winds it's way to the coast plus the Pink Lake which always popular with the tourist. However, the Kalbarri region is best known for its sandstone cliffs that look put over the ocean to the west, and that was what I wanted to capture in my landscape image.

I explore a location called Mushroom Rock and found a composition looking north up the coast. The cliffs came into the image from the right and with the colour of the setting sun, would light up the sandstone drawing out the rich warm orange and red tones of the cliffs.

I positioned the camera so in the foreground of the image there was a massive rock shelve where the water pushed up by the waves cascaded off to create strong interest. I knew the water movement would immediately catch the eye of the view but I had two challenges. Even wideout at 17mm on my Nikon D850, could I capture an image with the entire cascade fitting in the frame. Plus with the sheer amount of water what was the ideal shutter speed to use ensure I capture the water with enough detail. Timing the shot was going to be everything.
